Azurite & Malachite–Associated Uranium Ore - Hideout Mine, UT
Hideout Mine, Utah
This is a large, uranium-bearing ore specimen from the Hideout Mine, Utah, a classic Colorado Plateau uranium locality.
The specimen displays a visually striking copper–uranium oxidation assemblage, including:
Blue azurite (copper carbonate)
Green malachite (copper carbonate)
Yellow secondary uranium mineralization occurring as fine coatings and impregnations within sandstone matrix
This multi-mineral association is characteristic of copper–uranium deposits in the region and provides both strong visual contrast and measurable radioactivity.
Physical Details
Weight: 2 lb 13 oz (≈1.3 kg)
Dimensions: ~6 × 4 × 3 inches
Locality: Hideout Mine, Utah, USA
Radiation Measurement
Activity: ~5,000 CPM measured with a pancake Geiger probe
UV Response: No significant fluorescence observed under 365nm UV
Shipping: Ships legally under UN 2910 or UN 2911 – Excepted Radioactive Material
The radioactivity is primarily associated with the yellow secondary uranium minerals; the azurite and malachite are non-radioactive copper minerals occurring in natural association.
Notes for Collectors
Authentic specimen
No artificial enhancement or stabilization
Ideal as an ore-grade uranium display specimen
This is from famous and sealed mine. Authentic new material is extremely rare
⚠️ Radiation Notice: Emits measurable ionizing radiation. This is a dust producing piece. Do not handle excessively; display appropriately.
